Sofitel Sydney Wentworth
The rebirth of a Sydney icon. Following an eye-watering, head-to-toe seventy million dollar refurbishment, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has been thoughtfully transformed and I was keen to revisit to see the result for myself.
On my first and only stay it was admittedly difficult not to notice the property was appearing a little tired, particularly in a sea of neighbouring new-build luxury hotels. Despite this, I also unmistakably remember noting the palpable sense of grandeur and classic luxury the hotel possessed, from the incredible floral display to the striking chandeliers greeting you on arrival.
Now beautifully refreshed, this iconic Sydney property has successfully been brought into the 21st century, yet thankfully has still kept its heritage and its long, nearly six-decade history as Australia's first five-star hotel respected.
THE ROOM.
Spread over fifteen floors, the hotel offers 391 rooms and 45 spacious suites, most of which overlook the elevated horseshoe-shaped central courtyard and all receiving a makeover.
AMENITIES.
For those staying in one of the property’s Club rooms or top-tier suites, guests have access to the exclusive Sofitel Club Lounge on Level 5, opposite the main restaurant and bordering the central courtyard. Open daily throughout the day, the Club offers breakfast in the morning and afternoon tea and evening canapes and drinks, along with all-day refreshments.
DINING.
Arguably the most exciting part of the property’s recent refurbishment was the complete overhaul of its restaurants and bars, creating four new unique spaces in partnership with House Made Hospitality. In place of what was once Garden Court Restaurant is now Delta Rue, serving a lively mix of Vietnamese-French flavours and energy overlooking the property’s iconic rooftop courtyard.
Once an incredibly under-utilised space has now been transformed into a unique all-weather rooftop bar. What will soon become one of Sydney’s must-visit drinking spots, offers an extensive champagne list complemented by a world-class cocktail selection, including dramatic large-scale cocktails serving up to 10 people, a first in Sydney inspired by the NoMad Hotel in New York City.
Downstairs in the hotel’s lobby is Tilda, offering relaxed dining with a focus on delightful simplicity and local sustainability. The inviting atmosphere and approachable menu highlight the best of Australian produce sourced from dedicated, smaller-scale producers nationwide. Think elegant house-made pastas, produce from land and sea prepared with intention and cooked over charcoal, and nostalgic desserts that delight.
Whether visiting pre- or post dining at Tilda directly opposite or dropping by before exploring, Bar Tilda is the perfect blend of good company, live music, savoury bites and refined drinks, all enjoyed in a setting that encourages lingering and savouring the moment.
